Human Rights and Female Prostitution

“Human Rights and Female Prostitution” is a Portuguese-English booklet launched by Sex Workers’ Association DaVida (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and the Brazilian Prostitute’s Network. This publication shows the history of the prostitute’s movement in Brazil, presenting a research on female prostitution and human rights.



Rethinking the War on Drugs: The Impact of US Drug Control Policy on Global Public Health

This working paper was published at the Columbia Law, Policy and Rights Program web page by SPW’s co-chair Richard Parker, and co-authored with Joanne Csete and Nancy Worthington. It develops a critique of US policies on drug control and harm reduction under the Bush and Obama administrations, describing the political and historical constraints inherited by the new government and seeking to highlight the opportunities the Obama White House has for turning the page on the wasteful and abuse drug policies of the past.



Urgency Required – Gay and Lesbian Rights are Human Rights

Urgency Required focuses on urgent issues of gay and lesbian liberation, taking a historical perspective and reflecting worldwide geographic diversity. Employing the term ‘LGBT-persons’, the acronym used for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, it explores concepts and strategies for taking steps towards decriminalization and equal rights and treatment regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. The editors of this book are Ireen Dubel and André Hielkema. Ireen Dubel is Programme Manager Gender, Women and Development at Hivos. André Hielkema works for the Dutch Humanist Alliance and the humanist Socrates Foundation.



Report based on a panel held at the 54th UN Commission on the Status of Women

During the 54th UN Commission on the Status of Women, held in New York, in March, 2010, Ipas, IPPF and the Government of The Netherlands co-sponsored a panel entitled: Unwanted pregnancy, abortion and young women: Are we achieving the mandates of the Bejing Platform for Action?. LGBT Communication Manual

The Brazilian Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transvestite and Transsexual Association (ABGLT) launched the LGBT Communication Manual during the ILGA LAC Conference, in Curitiba, Brazil, in January, 2010. This manual is aimed at communication professionals, students and teachers (journalists, broadcasters, publicity agents, public relations professionals, among others).

Making Sex Work Safe: a practical guide for programme managers, policy makers and field workers, written by Paulo Longo and Cheryl Overs, brings together experience and knowledge on programmes working to reduce HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases among male, female and transgender sex workers. The new handbook uses case studies, stories and community-based projects to explore the issues and challenges facing sex workers and sex work health programmes and provides many practical suggestions for project development.



Bodies in Doubt: An American History of Intersex

Bodies in Doubt breaks new ground in examining the historical roots of modern attitudes about intersex in the United States and will interest scholars and researchers in disability studies, social history, gender studies, and the history of medicine. It was written by Elizabeth Reis, an associate professor in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the History Department at the University of Oregon.



Gender Equity in Health: The Shifting Frontiers of Evidence and Action

Edited by Gita Sen and Piroska Östlin, this volume brings together experts from a variety of disciplines, such as medicine, biology, sociology, epidemiology, anthropology, conomics and political science, who focus on three areas: health disparities and inequity due to gender, the specific problems women face in meeting the highest attainable standards of health, and the policies and actions that can address them. Highlighting the importance of intersecting social hierarchies (e.g. gender, class and ethnicity) for understanding health inequities and their implications for health policy, contributors detail and recommend policy approaches and agendas that incorporate, but go beyond commonly acknowledged issues relating to women’s health and gender equity in health.
